History of NASPAG: Annual Clinical Meeting / Annual Clinical Research Meeting


The 1st annual clinical meeting of NASPAG was held at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, in Ohio in 1987. Dr. Gidwani served as the Program Chair.

The NASPAG leadership planned a postgraduate course in November 1998 in Chicago as a money-making event, with presentations from the leadership/officers of NASPAG. 

2009 was the first year that the Board reached out to the membership to self-propose workshops and sessions. Previously the annual program was set by the Program Committee and all presentations were by-invitation-only.  The Committee was very proud that year to have opened up the 2010 meeting for new participants, presenters, and ideas.  2009 ACRM Program.

During 2010 and 2011, the name and focus of the Annual Clinical Meeting was changed to highlight and support more meaningful research.  From that time on, the meeting was titled and promoted as the Annual Clinical and Research Meeting.

2012 - International Dinners at the ACRM- started by Ellen Rome. The first dinner included 12 members.  Since then, it has been an annual event, with approximately 50 international attendees celebrating together.  

2013-2014 - ACRM - The President’s Award was initiated by Dr. Mary Ann Jamieson for a  member who’s contribution was above and beyond. Drs. Veronica Gomez-Lobo and Jennifer Dietrich were the first co-recipients.  Dr. Jamieson chose Dr. Veronica Gomez- Lobo for her labor of love with the Fellows and Research Consortium and Dr. Jennifer Dietrich for her leadership with the Education Committee. Past President Awards 

Visiting Scholars Program - started in 2006 – Residents, Medical Students, Nursing Students who are chosen, following application, to attend the ACRM and supported by money from the Raffle program. Goal- introduce more learners to PAG. At the conclusion of the program they are required to write an essay detailing the experience.

2016- 2017 - Industry sponsored workshops were introduced at the ACRM

2020 - the ACRM was canceled due to COVID-19.

2021 - NASPAG held a virtual ACRM due to COVID-19. This was the first virtual meeting and it started the trend of using technology to share ACRM content beyond the in-person meeting. NASPAG has continued to post portions of the ACRM on the LMS portion of the website - Annual Clinical Research Meeting Virtual Content.

2024 was the 38th ACRM 

2025 ACRM will be held in Toronto

2026 ACRM will also host the World Congress in PAG

Awards presented at the ACRM

1988- Huffman Capraro Award in PAG for the best oral research presentation, presented by the Abstract Committee Chair. Letter about the award, 1988.

2003- Evelyn G. Laufer Best Abstract Award, best overall oral presentation, named in honor of the Mother of Marc and Leonard Laufer, endowment established by Leonard and Marc Laufer, presented by Dr. Marc Laufer or his designee

2006 - Sally E. Perlman Best Poster Award (presented by Dr. Paige Hertweck or her designee

2013 - The Young Scholars Award established by Drs. Jennifer Kurkowski and Elizabeth Alderman- presented by the physician and nursing young scholar chairs when possible

2022 - Health Disparities Research Award, best original research abstract focusing on and highlighting disparities in groups who have systematically faced greater obstacles in obtaining and maintaining health resources, presented by an Advocacy or Anti-racism Committee member

The Most Impactful Poster Award 

Resident Education Committee Award for Innovation in Medical Education, best original research oral or poster presentation, presented by a Resident Education Committee member

Presentation of Raffle winners (presented by Raffle Chair/Co-chair)- the Raffle was started by Dr. Diane Merrit in2009. The funds are used to support the Visiting Scholars Program 

NASPAG Service Awards - to recognize the efforts of an individual member for their service to NASPAG 

2013- President’s Award - Chosen by the current NASPAG President  

2023- NASPAG Service Award - Nominated by NASPAG membership and chosen by the Board. The first recipient is Dr. Seema Menom
